UnityPoint Health Des Moines Blank Children's STAR and Development Center

West Des Moines, Iowa

The STAR & Developmental Center is a two-story, purpose-built facility that unites trauma-informed care with developmental and behavioral health services for children. The design creates a safe, child-friendly environment with natural light, colorful yet calming finishes, interactive waiting areas, and quiet rooms that support both privacy and play. Separate floors provide clear zoning: the lower level for STAR Center advocacy and recovery services, and the upper level for developmental assessments and therapies.

Outdoor green spaces and secure circulation routes connect the building to nature while maintaining safety for children and families. The design balances openness with confidentiality, ensuring young patients feel supported while parents and providers have spaces for collaboration. By combining specialized programs in one facility, the center represents a significant investment in the future health and resilience of Iowa's children.
