Waverly Health Center (WHC) Emergency Department and Clinic Expansion

Waverly, Iowa

Waverly Health Center delivered a $36 million project—33,000 square feet of new construction plus 44,000 square feet of renovation—evolving a 2018 master plan to transform emergency and outpatient care. The new Emergency Department centers on a care team hub for direct sightlines and faster access, with dedicated behavioral health accommodations to enhance safety and calm during urgent moments.

Adjacent outpatient and specialty services were refreshed: the Christophel Clinic houses family practice, pediatrics, women's health, and behavioral health; the General Surgery Clinic expanded for advanced minimally invasive and bariatric procedures; and cardiac rehab, infusion, and pharmacy services were upgraded for current needs and future growth. Relocated administrative and information offices improve privacy and operational efficiency.

Design emphasizes patient-focused healing: daylight-filled additions and concourses bring nature into the experience, a welcoming canopy defines entrances, and a curated color palette guides and calms patients. Natural materials and wood finishes create dignity and human connection. Major infrastructure upgrades—new chillers, cooling tower, air handling units, and electrical systems—boost resilience and efficiency.

Together, these enhancements deliver advanced emergency readiness, expanded primary and specialty services, and efficient, community-centered operations that build lasting confidence in local care.
